(Newcastle supporters: I’m sorry. I fully appreciate your plight. As a Chicago Cubs baseball fan I’m fully aware of what it’s like to support a side that does nothing but disappoint you so profoundly on an annual basis. Please take no offense to the following.)
What a sorry side Newcastle is. They truly owe their supporters an apology. Seldom does a side capitulate so willingly in the face of the slightest difficulty. They play with the kind of resignation only seen in sides destined for relegation. It is as if they fully anticipate the worst, then actively court it once they fall behind. I couldn’t imagine supporting a side like Newcastle; they are truly undeserving of support.
It isn’t as though they are a small club; 14th in the Football Money League at £129.4m. What have they done with their riches? Fielded a side of players whose goal differential against the top half of the EPL table is -26. In their last four matches against Arsenal and Manchester United they have been defeated by an aggregate total of 17-1. They will have taken 2 points from their last nine matches and they have only come from behind to win once all season. It’s one thing to be a poor side, but to quit is unforgivable. (more…)

That was simple. Arsenal was roundly embarrassed by an unquestionably superior Manchester United today. Exhibiting absolutely none of the qualities that have placed them atop the Premier League table and all of the qualities that make them such a despicable, loathsome club, Arsenal may not have fielded their first choice side, but their performance was anything but first class.
From William Gallas being forced to eat his words, to Emmanuel Eboue’s straight red, to Cesc Fabregas’ disappearing act, to Emmanuel Adebayor’s laughable dive, Arsenal were not simply defeated, they humiliated themselves. As Arsenal’s captain, one would think that Gallas would know better. Running your mouth to a side as potent as United is comically ill-advised. While we may have exhibited the “arrogance” that Gallas spoke of, there is a reason for that. We are arrogant because at our best we can defeat clubs like Arsenal with our second choice side. Players like Ji-Sung Park and Darren Fletcher looked like world-beaters, while players who are normally in Arsenal’s first-choice side did nothing but sully their own representations and their clubs name.

While there are often days where I wish I was a resident of Manchester, today, certainly, is not one of them. Manchester City won convincingly today to give them their first double over United since 1969-1970.
The day started well. Today’s match commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, and supporters from both sides observed a minute’s silence in honor of those who perished. While bangs could be heard outside Old Trafford, the silence within the stadium was impeccable. Supporters from both sides should be proud of their conduct today.

We certainly didn’t deserve to take a point from that contest. United were exposed for all of their weaknesses today by an inspired Tottenham Hotspur side that was truly unlucky not to win. I don’t even know where to begin with our team’s performance today, but it was not good in any aspect. I honestly believe that you need to be a part of the side to know what the cause was for today’s performance, for United was so poor in so many areas as to make you wonder if they were all out on a bender the night previous.

There is no need for great analysis. By any conceivable metric Manchester United were the superior side today. Outclassing Pompey from the start, Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United sealed the victory after only 13 minutes of play and the remaining 77 minutes were a mere formality. One could analyze the minutes that came after Cristiano Ronaldo’s absolutely sublime free-kick, but that goal displayed everything that separates Manchester United from Portsmouth; nothing further needed to be proven. The exhibition that followed featured a free-flowing United side whose dynamic play was labeled as “breathtaking” by Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp. United’s failure to score beyond the early period of the match could be viewed with some concern, but both sides seemed to accept the match was decided.
